Timber and Forestry
This division of Khami Enterprises embraces the full production process from sustainable forest management, logging, the production of rough-sawn timber, manufacture of furniture & flooring to the utilisation of all wood waste or residual products. The FSC Principles of sustainable forest management guide all development considerations.
Our integrated operations from the growing tree through to the marketing of the finished product has the advantage of better cost management and it ensures a greater long-term and integrated approach to our operations. Partners include important local and regional private and public sector players as well as local host communities. We as a group believe that it is important that communities benefit directly from the “Teak Forests” where they live; something that historically has not been the case. Khami Enterprises has from the onset strived to create a new mindset and social commitment that other local timber operators are now seeking to follow.
The company is responsible for the entire forest environmental management process as well as a community liaison. This includes the day-to-day operations in the various forest blocks where we have interests as well as working to achieve long-term sustainability. These blocks are in the Tsholotsho, Lupane, and Hwange Districts of Zimbabwe.
We are stimulated by current global initiatives to reduce unnecessary carbon emissions. Through the prevention of fires and as carbon sinks, these forests are possibly eligible for carbon sequestration accreditation. We are currently investigating mechanisms by which this can be achieved for purposes of funding forest management as well as potential seed capital for the host community business enterprises.
We are also in the process of identifying alternate land-use strategies in these same areas. Through facilitating sustainable agricultural, wildlife, and tourism projects in the Teak Forests we will protect the forests for the future and at the same time empower local communities as well as opening new business opportunities for investors.
Kalahari Wood Products
The company seeks to recover the waste material and residuals produced by the other divisions of Khami Enterprises. This is transformed into wooden toys, household accessories, children’s furniture and sawdust briquettes – this last an alternative energy source.
A key component of Kalahari Wood Products is the empowerment of local communities as partners in operations. We believe this is a real growth sector in future.
Currently Kalahari Wood Products (Zimbabwe) operates from premises in Bulawayo but there are advanced plans to shift most operations to the rural locations in and adjacent to the timber concessions where Khami Enterprises operates. Establishing local mini-factory units we aim to bring business opportunities closer to the homes of those who live in the Zambezi Teak Forests.
Kalahari Wood Products is invested in extending the Khami Enterprises range of operations.
