Tourism & Conservation

This is an exciting sector of Khami Enterprises’ interests as it is recognised as one of the major growth sectors for the region for the next few decades. We are involved in existing facilities as well as looking for fresh and innovative projects. Partnering with others is a consistent element of our approach. Working with the Kalahari Sands Foundation we are helping to facilitate and partner with local communities and government bodies to initiate projects in the tourism and conservation sector.

Celebrating the diverse heritage, landscapes and wildlife of Africa we strive to make our activities as “green” as possible, all the while catering for a diversity of visitor tastes and expectations.

Hillside Dams Conservancy

The Hillside Dams Conservancy is a unique natural and cultural setting in the heart of Bulawayo’s southern suburbs. It is one of the City’s recreational venues of choice, boasting two century-old rock paintings, aloe gardens, natural ampitheatre and beautiful walking trails and a meeting/events venue.

As part of its corporate social responsibility program, Khami Enterprises has teamed up with local residents and supporters to restore and maintain this area for residents and visitors.

Rowallan Camp

Rowallan Camp lies within the Matopos National Park and is being developed as an education, conservation and recreational centre.

Rowallan Camp lies 3km from the main gate, within the Matopos National Park at the base of the dominant Imadzi dwala between Sandyspruit Dam and the MOTH Shrine.
It was originally founded by the Boy Scouts movement, before it was handed over to the Girl Guides to become their regional camping ground. In the late 1990s the area was handed back to the Zimbabwe National Parks.

A local, Bulawayo-based, group of likeminded conservationists and educators have recently leased the site with the view to redevelop it as an educational, conservation and recreational centre. The plans, which are being crafted in conjunction with local Parks officials, place an emphasis on providing a safe, accessible retreat to stimulate and educate visitors, especially school children of all ages.

The focus of this unique outdoor classroom will not, however, be all teaching and there will be a strong element of fun and varied adventure activities.

In addition to the key educational component to this project, our vision for this 36-hectares of prime land within the heart of the Matobo includes developing an events venue and camping grounds. Guided walks are planned both in the Park and the adjacent Communal Lands.

Experienced, knowledgeable teachers and professional guides will be on hand if required. An element of the “outward-bound” principles will be incorporated.

Leadership development, adult fieldwork and heritage training are all programmes on the drawing board, as well as the obvious opportunities for team-building activities. It is hoped that the centre will also be used by Parks and local NGOs for consultative and development meetings.

Nature’s Valley

Nature’s Valley is a special purpose company setup to assist in the development of Tuli Circle.

African Junctions

This is a concept of heritage-oriented resorts along the major tourism corridors across Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia. It is a developmental project in which we seek to enable local communities and entrepreneurs to become involved in the tourism industry as joint venture partners all the while adhering to the standards of the group.

Through the use of local vernacular architecture blended with the modern standards and showcasing local traditions and arts the visitor is exposed to the colour and diversity of African culture. Clients live Africa rather than just observing it. Site museums, local heritage-based tours, community participation in story telling, art & craft, dance and some food items are at the heart of each resort.

African Junctions resorts incorporate a strong “green” element – preferential sourcing of local food, solar energy, sustainable water systems, recycling, community empowerment and voluntary carbon offset contributions channeled into approved projects. We want to achieve that elusive ideal of truly “Sustainable Tourism”.
